The world-renowned architect and designer Mario Bellini is perhaps one of the best-known Italian designers. A highly influential figure in Italian design since the 1960s: from architecture, to urban planning, to furniture and industrial design. Bellini was born in Milan in 1935. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1959. Soon after, he became the design director at La Rinascente, a popular chain of Italian department stores. In 1963, he was hired by technology company Olivetti as their chief design consultant. In the same year, he and business partner Marco Romano founded the architectural and design firm Studio Bellini in Milan. Bellini is particularly known for his original, organic and technically complex forms. Bellini collaborated with several companies such as Renault, Rosenthal and Yamaha and furniture brands such as Artemide, Vitra, Cassina and B&B Italia. Iconic designs include the Amanta Chair (1966) and Le Bambole Sofa (1972), both for B&B Italia eb the Kar-a-Sutra van (1972) for Citroën. In addition, Mario Bellini was director of the prestigious Italian architecture and design magazine Domus.
