Horst Egon Kalinowski, born in 1924 in Düsseldorf, studied from 1945 to 1948 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and from 1950 to 1952 he studied in Paris in the studio for abstract art of Jean Dewasne and Edgard Pillet, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He started exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris, in 1953, 1954, 1956. Afterwards he participated in numerous group exhibitions and also had solo exhibitions in Paris, several cities in Germany, Brussels and New York.
Until 1956 he made non-figurative paintings, then he left painting for collages and assemblages of different materials, which imitate leather or which in the paintings are meticulously covered with branches, stumps, planks and boxes until the appearance of the so-called Caissons, that have the appearance of doors or furniture. In 1965 the Caissons took on the appearance of stelae.
From 1980 onwards he worked directly with leather, instead of imitating it, mounted on a structure of wood and metal, and executed his objects in relief and sculpture.
From 1961 he also made etchings.
