Vintage Saint Amand les Eaux ceramic bowl
Note that the flaw at the base of the bowl is original and almost invisible // A little history Already owner of an earthenware factory in Rimbaud, Belgium in the 1870s, Emile L'Herminé Declercq, wishing to increase his production, moved with his brother Joseph to Orchies in 1886. Orchies, a former stronghold of the Counts of Flanders, is close to the Belgian border and not far from Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, a famous center of earthenware production since the 18th century, with the "Moulin des Loups" earthenware factory. In 1904, he shifted production to artistic earthenware under the name "L'Herminé et Cie". In Orchies, L'Herminé Declercq can be found under the brand name OLD. In the 1920s, the Orchies faience factory merged with the Hamage faience factory to become Le "Moulin des Loups & Hamages". The mark is usually adorned with the windmill and the capital lettering ORCHIES. The earthenware factory employed some 175 people in the 1910s, when the town of Orchies had a population of around 5,000. The workforce gradually increased to over 500 between 1950 and 1970. The workshops continued to produce until 1980, when they closed for good. The production of planters with Art Deco-inspired floral decorations is typically "Orchies".
