Henri Lancel played a key role in modernizing the company in the 1920s and 1930s, introducing new handbag designs and developing a sleeker, more functional aesthetic. He also contributed to the brand's international expansion, opening boutiques in London and New York. During the Second World War, Lancel was captured and interned in Germany, but managed to escape and return to France in 1944. After the war, he continued to work for Lancel, designing handbags and travel items that proved very popular with customers. In 1976, the Lancel family sold the company to the Swiss luxury goods company Richemont, but the brand continues to produce high-quality leather goods and luggage under the Lancel name. Today, Henri Lancel is considered one of the most influential designers in the brand's history.
