Zhao Guangchen (1961 - 2009), born in Songyuan, China, graduated with a BA in Art from Northeast Normal University in 1988. Inspired by the desecration (damming) of rivers, including those in his hometown as well as in Beijing, he initiated "The Future Trees," a disturbing series painted in a ghostly grisaille. In this series, traditional Chinese landscapes are transformed into a post-apocalyptic world where humanity destroys both nature and itself.
Zhao depicts scorched trees with heavy broken branches, sometimes adorned with plastic toys and other conspicuously artificial materials. Drops of paint create the impression of melting away.
