Product description
Flat weaving by hand in wool or perhaps cotton. Eva Nemeth is a Hungarian artist whose work is in the spirit of Scandinavian design. The originality of this hanging lies in its asymmetry. Dated 1980. Textile designer Éva Németh (1930-2019) was best known for her tapestries with bird and animal motifs. Her creations were produced by the Hungarian company Ziola and sold mainly in Scandinavia, or designed by the Békéscsaba carpet weaving mill (Bekescsaba, Hungary) from the 1960s onwards, where some one hundred weavers transformed her creations into one-of-a-kind rugs.
The background is light grayish beige, while the abstract figures are in shaded brown. Monogrammed NÉ lower right. The weft is wool and the warp, I believe, cotton. Height 205 cm, width 140 cm. It is in good condition. This tapestry hung in an alcove for 16 years. Then it was rolled up for 3 years and has been hanging again since 2019 far from the window in a room with little natural light. A rare and original vintage piece. It is offered at a fixed price, as Éva Nemeth's stock is rising in the auction rooms.
It has traces of pilling and needs a new dry cleaning.
Approximate date of purchase between 2000 and 2001 in Isère, France, by my late husband (who died in 2010). I was never able to find the invoice when I moved, and, as it was a gift, I don't know where my husband got this tapestry. It is listed on the website of his son, himself a designer.
