Description
The Panton Chair is undoubtedly Verner Panton's best-known and perhaps most important design. Its unusual and memorable shape and the technical production innovations associated with this piece of furniture have made the chair an icon of 20th century chair design.
The idea of a free-swinging chair made from a single piece of material was first conceived by Panton in 1956 during a furniture competition organized by WK-Möbel. Around 1958/59, he produced design sketches that already clearly refer to the Panton Chair. A short time later, Panton had a 1:1 model (not suitable for sitting) of his chair idea made from thermoformed polystyrene to help him find a manufacturer. This surviving model, which is often mistakenly referred to as a prototype, is now in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum and shows clear differences to the later Panton Chair.
After Panton came into contact with Willi Fehlbaum, the head of Vitra at the time, in the early 1960s and he signaled his willingness to develop the chair for series production, Panton moved to Basel with his family. However, it was not until the years between 1965 and 1967 that development work on the chair was intensively pursued. The Panton Chair was then presented to the public for the first time in August 1967. Since then, the chair has been produced in four different versions using four different plastic materials and different production technologies.
Both economic and aesthetic reasons were decisive for the change of material. All versions have been developed in close collaboration between the manufacturer and Verner Panton.
The production history of the Panton chair is as follows:
1967/68
First series production made of cold-pressed, glass fiber-reinforced polyester resin, painted in color.
Manufacturer: Herman Miller/Vitra
1968-1971
Second series model made of polyurethane hard foam, painted in color.
Manufacturer: Herman Miller/Vitra
1971-1979
Third series model made of the already colored thermoplastic polystyrene (Luran S). The chairs made of this material are clearly recognizable by the ribs below the kink between the seat and the train.
Manufacturer: Vitra; in the USA until 1975 Herman Miller
The Panton Chair was not in production between 1979-1983.
1983 until today
