Vitra ETR coffee table
CHARLES & RAY EAMES (1907-1978)/ VITRA
The Vitra ETR Coffee Table is a design by Charles & Ray Eames. The table, which the Eames couple designed in 1951, owes its name to its oval shape and steel wire base. ETR is an abbreviation of 'Elliptical (E) Table (T) on a Rod (R) base'. The ETR Coffee Table is a follow-up to the LTR table that was released a year earlier. Just like the LTR, the ETR Coffee Table has a low base. The table was soon nicknamed the 'Surfboard Table', because the large elliptical shape that sits low to the ground is reminiscent of a surfboard.
In the early 1950s, a need arose for furniture that was not made of wood or that looked as if it were not made of wood. The ETR Coffee Table is also made of plywood, but the furniture does not have a wooden appearance due to the hard laminated top plate. Originally the magazine was only available in black. Nowadays a white version is also available. The base of the ETR Coffee Table consists of two low constructions of bent steel wires that are welded together with a chrome finish.
The ETR Coffee Table has a length of 226.7 centimeters, a depth of 74.6 centimeters and a height of 25.5 centimeters.
