Product description
Small Imari porcelain vase, pps. s. XX – Japan
Small Imari porcelain vase made in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. Made of white porcelain, covered with polychrome enamels with flower motifs and reserves in ocher, lapis lazuli blue and gold. Globular in shape at its base, it ends with a high neck and straight mouth. Imari porcelain has as characteristic features an ornate decoration, almost always floral, made to satisfy Western markets, and the use of blue under the cover and red enamel (sometimes also green) on the cover, frequently enriched with gilding. The result, therefore, is a very striking ornament thanks to the chromatic intensity of the blue contrast. On the main cartouches you can see the trunk of a maple with its characteristic red leaves (momiji, in Japanese). It also presents schematic representations of a lotus flower scattered throughout the piece.
Imari porcelain is the Western name given to porcelain products made in the town of Arita (Saga), Japan. Specifically, Imari is the neighboring city where porcelain is exported abroad through its port. Arita as a pottery center has its origins in the 18th century when a kaolin deposit was discovered. Since then, porcelain with a strong Chinese influence was produced, since before the discovery, all the ceramics that existed in Japan were imported from China and Korea. Thanks to its high export, Imari porcelain designs were decisive in the process of orientalization of European ceramics, in the porcelain production centers of Meissen and Vincennes. After the Meiji era, Imari porcelain underwent a process of industrialization and its production continues today.
