Product description
This is a beautiful vintage raku pottery sculpture of a beautiful bear that was created by legendary raku pottery master Tony Evans in California in the 1970's.
Tony Evans figural pieces from the 1970s are quite rare and are highly sought after by collectors. This is an exceptional example of Evans' early studio work produced during a creatively prolific time when he often traveled to Japan and Korea to study with ceramic art masters, focusing primarily on the art of raku. Raku is a technique in which pieces are baked in a 2,000-degree fire and then quickly dipped into a pit of leaves or paper to reduce the chemical reaction on the surface, creating a broken eggshell texture or multi-colored sheen of cobalt blue and copper red sheen.
This bear sculpture has a beautiful shape and looks very tender and naturalistic.
The surface of the raku pottery has shades of light gray blue and a rich orangy copper. The surface looks old, as if covered with lichens, but it is a piece of modern art, which is the beauty of Tony Evans' work.
