Product description
Beautiful vintage Thai Singha lion / Foo dog sin label but assigned to Maison Jansen, France 1960s. Both statue and hood in good condition. Bronze / brass statue with nice aged patina. A Foo Dog, also known as a Fu Dog or Guardian Lion, is a traditional Southeast Asian architectural ornament and a symbol of protection. Despite the name, Foo Dogs are not dogs, but stylized representations of lions. They are often placed in pairs at the entrances of palaces, temples, houses and other important buildings in Chinese and East Asian culture. These images have their origins in Buddhism and are believed to ward off evil spirits. The word "Singha" is derived from the Sanskrit "Simha," meaning lion. In Buddhism, the lion is associated with Buddha's "lion roar," referring to the powerful and persuasive teaching of his teachings. In Thailand, for example, he is seen as a symbol of royalty.
