Designer Philippe Starck, born in Paris in 1949, has been described as a provocateur, an advocate of democratic design and "a superstar on the French design scene. It is said that as a child, Starck slept under the drawing board of his father, who was an inventor and aeronautical engineer. Starck went on to study at the École Camondo in Paris, but was later quoted as saying that he "learned nothing there" and instead was driven by his own curiosity. One of the pieces originally commissioned by the New York Royalton Hotel in 1986. This piece was given to our client by Steve Rubbell, who co-owned the Royalton Hotel with Ian Schrager. Rectangular table ashtray polished aluminum, diagonally tilted lid, engraved 'Starck' Dimensions: 11.1 x 11.7 x 7.3 cm First published before XO began publishing (from 1990). Included in the MoMA design collection.
