Gustav Bolin (1920 - 1999) was born in Sweden, but a year after his birth the family moved to Paris, where he stayed. In 1947, he began exhibiting at the Salon de Mai. Drawn into the circle of artists gathered around the avant-garde Galerie Pierre Loeb, he had his first solo exhibition there in 1948. Then he exhibited at Galerie Art Vivant, in the excellent company of de Stael, Mirò, Germain and Lanskoy. After this early success, he moved to Antibes where he could create in the Mediterranean landscape he loved. Bolin had many exhibitions around the world, including in the USA, Japan and Sweden.
"Between figuration and abstraction, his art is a constant search for independence and harmony. His characters move us, his labyrinths stun, his lights soothe. Each painting is a unique adventure that cannot leave the attentive observer indifferent." – wrote Bertrand Delanoë in 2006 in the introduction to Bolin's exhibition at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.
