Extraordinary oil on canvas signed by Etienne Ritter in the lower right-hand corner. It depicts a European village in the French region of Alsace, in the artist's characteristic style, with material brushstrokes and ethereal composition to capture the essence of what is represented. The houses have roofs in warm tones, mainly red and orange, contrasting with a gray sky that suggests a cloudy atmosphere. The brushwork is thick and pasty, giving a rich, striking texture to the canvas surface, creating a three-dimensional effect. Étienne Ritter (1934 - 1994)
Étienne Ritter is a French painter from Sondernach, Alsace. Born into a modest family, he began painting at an early age. During his military service in Algeria, he continued to develop his passion for painting. On his return, he decided to devote himself professionally to art. Ritter is known for his landscapes of Alsace, particularly in spring and winter, as well as for his still lifes and floral scenes. His style evolved from detailed figurative painting to the exploration of cubism and more abstract techniques, particularly between 1975 and 1990. Despite a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, he continued to paint until the end of his life. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in France, Canada and abroad, and is part of public collections such as the Musée d'Art Moderne in Strasbourg.
