Product description
Magnificent oil on canvas by Valencian painter Bartolomé Mongrell Muñoz depicting a Valencian costumbrist couple. A disciple of his cousin José Mongrell, Bartolomé Mongrell studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts. His training led him to decorative voluptuousness, vivid colors and scenes of Valencian customs full of orange trees, traditional costumes and golden light. An academic painter, he excelled in Valencian themes, mainly in regional genre painting, where he demonstrated his mastery of chromaticism as an heir to luminism, although he is somewhat associated with modernism. His painting tends to be tenebrist, as evidenced by the shadows and gradations that build up the forms, but at the same time Mediterranean in its chromatic treatment, where he demonstrates his mastery.
Costumbrism is an artistic trend or movement that reflects the customs and habits of society, with reference to a specific region or country and its traditional folklore as a whole. It emerged in Europe, particularly in Spain and France, during the 18th and 19th centuries. It focuses on depicting everyday life, often with an emphasis on the working classes, whether peasant or urban, capturing moments that reflect local cultural identity, folklore and habits. The protagonists were generally not great historical figures, but local people. In Spain, costumbrismo developed considerably, especially in the 19th century, and was a response to the rapid social and economic changes brought about by industrialization.
In this case, a couple, a man and a woman, are depicted. The woman is carrying a basket of fruit, including oranges, on her head, while the man is holding a rooster by the legs. Attention to detail is fundamental, with emphasis on traditional costumes, gestures and so on. The painting combines the artist's typical bright colors with his taste for contrasts, transforming the everyday and the popular into an artistic motif.
