Product description
The maralunga sofa was created in 1973 by vico magistretti for the italian firm cassina. Known for his creations using simple, essential forms and innovative materials for the time, he entered into numerous partnerships with the new editors of the day, all the while following his self-imposed guiding principle to the letter. The collaboration with cassina began in 1959 with the carimate chair, which was a great success, but nothing compared to the maralunga, which became a veritable icon of Italian design, winning the compaso d'oro in 1979. The Milanese architect and designer's main brief was to create an extremely comfortable chair, and the story goes that it was Cesare Cassina who, during a visit to the workshop, punched the back of a prototype, shattering it. The broken prototype inspired the designer to offer exceptional comfort to the user. And that's how the maralunga design was born. Still in production today, it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014, when Cassina redesigned its range in collaboration with the Vico Magistretti Foundation, adding a new finish to the structure's seams and, with the 40s model, a removable fabric cover. And last but not least, the 40 maxi, an enlarged version of the original model. The structure consists of a tubular steel frame with elastic straps. The seat is made of dif- ferentiated density cfc-free polyurethane foam and polyester, covered with a synthetic fur fabric. The back has two independent headrests, removable by an internal chain system patented by the Italian firm. In very good condition, entirely reupholstered in our workshop.
