Foundation and location: The furniture factories were located in Themar, a town in Thuringia. They were part of the state-owned company network that was set up in the GDR after the Second World War.
Products: The company specialized in the production of high-quality furniture that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They were particularly known for their cabinets, chests of drawers, tables and chairs, which were often in the classic and timeless design of the 50s to 70s.
Design and quality: The furniture from VEB Südthüringer Möbelwerke was known for its solid craftsmanship and durability. They mainly used local woods and attached great importance to workmanship and surface finishing.
Economic significance: The company played an important role in the GDR economy. Furniture from Thuringia was not only sold domestically, but also exported to other socialist states.
Historical context: After the reunification of Germany, many of the former VEB companies were privatized or closed. Some of the pieces of furniture from this period are now coveted collector's items, as they offer an insight into the design and culture of the GDR.
