Product description
This rare, and highly sought after Ercol dining suite, made of solid English beech and elm, has had one owner from new, being in the same dining room since original purchase, and has been exceptionally well cared for over the years.
The Ercol 493 Windsor Dining Arm Chairs were only made between 1964 – 1967 making this a seldom seen matching set of eight!
Accompanied by a Grand Windsor 444 slide leg Expanding Table, with stylishly splayed beech legs - one of Ercol’s most ingenious designs. Comfortable seating for ten people, the top is in two sections, extending by the telescopic action of the under rails of each section. The centre supporting leg slides back towards one end of the table when in its closed position, whilst the two leaves are stored under the top of the table in a purpose made cradle.
Quote from The Book of Ercol Furniture 1965: “When there is plenty of room in your dining room choose this amply proportioned chair. Its deeply curved ‘ladder-back-like’ slats in conjunction with the softly modeled arms, which are curved on the flat and on the side, make it an unusually comfortable and occasional chair.”
For a nearly 60-year-old set they’re in fantastic condition, mellowed over the years to a lovely honey-colour as beech does so well. All joints are tight; there are a couple of very small, barely noticeable period repairs to a couple of the chairs (see last image), and all we’ve had to do is a simple clean and polish. (A set of non-original cushions can be included if needed)
