Original vintage Vicontea cocoon lamp - designed by brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for FLOS - Italy in the 1960s/70s.
These are still made new but this is an old vintage from the 60s/70s. The new ones are whiter. Moreover, this specimen is in exceptionally good condition. Not a single crack or hole. The frame is also in non-oxidized perfect condition. Very rare to find this vintage edition in this condition.
The Viscontea is an iconic pendant lamp designed by Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1960 for the lighting company Flos. The lamp is one of the first examples of the innovative "cocoon" technology introduced by Flos in the 1960s.
The Viscontea lamp has an organic, almost cloud-like shape created by using a special plastic coating, known as cocoon, sprayed over a metal frame. This material creates a semi-transparent, slightly diffused surface that gives the lamp a soft and warm look.
The cocoon material, a synthetic resin originally developed in the United States for military purposes (to protect ex-war equipment from the elements), was introduced to the design world by the Castiglioni brothers. Spraying the resin in layers over the metal frame created a unique texture that gives the lamp its distinctive look.
Later, this technique was also introduced in Germany and elsewhere by the company Goldkant.
The Viscontea is one of many iconic designs by the Castiglioni brothers and remains a beloved piece in the world of designer lighting. The lamp has been included in several design collections and is considered a classic in modern lighting history.
Achille (1918-2002) and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) were two influential Italian designers who have gained worldwide recognition for their pioneering work in industrial and product design. They are best known for their innovative and often playful designs, uniquely combining functionality and aesthetics. During the 1960s, they designed several iconic lamps (Arco, Snoopy, Gatto,...) that are part of FLOS's success.
The designs of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni have had a lasting influence on contemporary design. Several of their design pieces are included in the collections of museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
