Exquisite Montparnasse frame, made in the mid-20th century. Montparnasse frames date back to the early 20th century, when the most bohemian painters settled in this district of Paris. Artists of very limited means, they carved the frames themselves from modest pine and left them unfinished. The patinas are all different, traditional frames being cream or grey. The sculpture itself is ornate, reminiscent of Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. This was understood as an extension of art, the frame being more than just a frame, and gilding soon made its appearance. Many painters of the École de Montparnasse and the École de Paris framed their post-impressionist and cubist paintings with the Montparnasse frame. The result is a decorative and highly distinctive frame.
