Toon Kelder was an artist who tried out different styles. He was a member of Pulchri Studio. In addition to the courses he followed, he was also a student of Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk and Frederik Nachtweh.
Toon Kelder started painting nudes and still lifes, which was typical of the Hague School. Around 1948, however, there was a drastic turnaround in his style, and Toon Kelder switched to abstract images and sculpture. Toon Kelder also made many portraits, and he was counted among the New Hague School.
