Toon Kelder (1894-1973)
Artist-painter-watercolourist-draughtsman-sculptor
He was inspired by the Parisian avant-garde artists to develop a very personal style in the early years of the twentieth century. At the same time, his work was shaped by a constant urge for innovation. In the 1920s he painted flowers, figures and nudes - usually with his wife Alexandrine as a model - all of which were rendered in expressive colours, which was typical of the Hague School. In the 1930s to 1945 his work became increasingly fanciful in character and painted in blonde tones and amber colours. Dreamy ideal images of subtly stylized female forms in soft, hazy tones, but also horsemen, amazons and mythical figures in wooded landscapes. This makes the works seem almost abstract in quality and are characterized by an emphasis on the female form. This was more important to Kelder than the model's facial expression.
“Dreamed reality” was called his work admiringly.
He was a member of Pulchri Studio. In addition to the courses he followed at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and Rotterdam Academy of Art, he was also a student of Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk and Frederik Nachtweh. Around 1948, however, there was a drastic turnaround in his style, and Toon Kelder switched to abstract images and sculpture.
Many museums have included work in their selection, including the Municipal Museum of The Hague, the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York and the Municipal Museum in Amsterdam.
The work offered here:
"Nursing Mother"
Sanguine on paper 51 x 38 cm.
Frame 64 x 78 cm.
Signed lower left
This is a pre-study, with a degree of certainty bordering on certainty, for the work “Nursing Mother” (oil on canvas, see last photo). This could explain the puncture holes present in the corners (see photo). The drawing is made on thick paper with the word (K)elder sons printed in the top right corner, upside down (see photo).
Very minor damage on the corners of the frame.
