Product description
Thomas Lange's "Frank als Pape", created in 1986, is a painting on paper from the artist's neo-expressionist period. Dominated by dark, earthy tones, the work features a central figure evocative of a papal silhouette, surrounded by abstract, symbolic elements. The face appears distorted, with details that accentuate the emotional intensity of the scene. The features are marked by a bold use of color and dark contrasts, typical of Lange's style at the time. The original Plexiglas frame protects this piece, which comes from a private Belgian collection. The work reflects Lange's unique approach, incorporating influences from Italian visual culture while exploring personal and contemporary themes. ### Thomas Lange Biography Born in Berlin in 1957, Thomas Lange is an influential artist of the neo-expressionist movements of the 1980s. He studied painting at Berlin University of the Arts under Professors Wolfgang Petrick and Herbert Kaufmann, obtaining his Master's degree in 1982. In 1986, he began teaching at the University of Marburg, before becoming a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1988 to 1989. Lange continued to share his expertise through various teaching positions, including at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, and the Bad Reichenhall Academy of Fine Arts. In 2003, he created the altar triptych "Pietá and Resurrection" at St. Paul's Cathedral in Münster. A prolific artist, Lange now lives and works between Berlin and Torre Alfina in Italy. His work, exhibited in numerous galleries around the world, is characterized by an idiosyncratic approach, refusing to follow established trends and drawing inspiration from the Italian masters to create portraits and scenes that captivate with their depth and expressiveness.
