Theo WOLVECAMP (Hengelo 1925 - Amsterdam 1992)
Biography / Education
Theo Wolvecamo was one of the artists of the famous Cobra movement. Theo Wolvecamp started painting at a young age. After studying at the art academy for two years, he stopped his studies in 1947 and left for Amsterdam. Wolvecamp became involved in the Experimental Group in Holland and in 1948 in the Cobra movement. From 1953 to 1954 Wolvecamp worked in Paris, after which he returned to his birthplace Hengelo. From Twente he participated in many national and international group exhibitions.
Wolvecamp's oeuvre can be divided into different periods. Just after the war, the work of Pablo Picasso had a great influence on Wolvecamp. Later he became interested in the painter Joan Miró. Furthermore, Kandinsky had a lot of influence on his work. After a Mir_-like beginning, Wolvecamp made abstract expressionist works in often dark tones and with thick layers of paint. Fantasy creatures and other figurative elements appear in his compositions (particularly from 1955 onwards), making them reminiscent of the paintings of the Danish COBRA member Asger Jorn.
Relatively few works by Theo Wolvecamp from his Cobra days have survived. This was because Wolvecamp was often very critical of his own work and destroyed or painted over many paintings.
