Since 1980 he has worked as an independent artist, both as a sculptor and as a painter. Other awards designed by him include the encouragement award for companies on keeping chronically ill people employed (1996) and an award for the Xena Foundation.
In 2005, he traveled to China, where he would work for 2.5 years, resulting in several large bronze sculptures.

In addition to being a visual artist, Mackaay is also a musician. In the 1970s, he was a guitarist and singer in Lenny Kuhr's backing band. Since the late 1970s, as a singer, guitarist and composer, he was part of the socially critical Dutch-language group Braak,[1] with whom he made four LPs: Demos, Suite for a Hypochondriac, Heldenkermis and Ik weet wat je lust. He played as a singer and guitarist in studio sessions and was featured in commercials. In 2016, his album With Heaven You Never Know was released.
