About the design
Vintage teak armchair by Erik Kirkegaard for Glostrup, Denmark, 1960s. Part of the Scandinavian modernist style that took the design world by storm in the 1950s and 1960s, Kirkegaard's designs were produced by chair manufacturer Høng Stolefabrik, based on the Danish island of Zealand.
The vast majority of vintage Kirkegaard pieces on the market are productions by Høng. His dining chairs are made of dark stained teak, usually with black leather seats, and have a minimalist aesthetic. Kirkegaard's 49 Chair (1956) has a uniquely shaped backrest and curved armrests that are
Hans Wegner enthusiasts will recall the famous Round Chair (1949). The hand-carved horn-shaped armrests and angular A-shaped legs are other signature elements of Erik Kirkegaard's designs. Kirkegaard also designed for Glostrup Møbelfabrik (albeit less productively), a manufacturer that produced a wide range of tables, chairs and storage furniture by designers such as Grete Jalk and Arne Vodder.
