About Strehla:
Strehla Keramik (VEB Saxony).
This factory was established in 1828 in Dresden. In some sources it is stated that the company takes its name from the place Strehla in Saxen and that it was originally located there. In 1930 the company was taken over by Steingutfabrik Colditz AG. After the Second World War, the situation changed. The area became East Germany and the company was renamed VEB Steingutfabrik Strehla. VEB stands for 'Volkseigener Betrieb'. That is a company that was publicly owned in the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990).
In the 1960s and 1970s, the East German company mainly made vases and flower pots, which were exported in large quantities to the Netherlands, among others. That is why Strehla vases are more difficult to find in Germany than vases from West German companies. The work of the East German manufacturer Strehla is subdued in colour, especially if you compare it with products from West Germany. Often there is a metal glaze over the base glaze layer.
Strehla mostly used brown clay. On the bottom is a kind of hexagon with the brand name Strehla d.m.v. an ink stamp or imprint, which is sometimes illegible. Often the designation 'GDR' is mentioned. The vase number usually consists of four digits and is pressed into the bottom. Strehla rarely stickered his products.
The company closed its doors in 1989.
