Product description
Fantastically beautiful captain's secretary in military campaign style. The edge protection strips, the inlays, the keys and also the feet are made of brass. The locks work perfectly and all the keys are present. The play of color, the "movement" of the beautiful wood grain is fantastic! +++ In the 18th and 19th centuries, Chinese cabinetmakers produced furniture for the Western market. Chinese craftsmen spread to many of Asia's busy ports to ply their trade. Calcutta is just one example of a city where a Chinese community made furniture for the British. Furniture was also made in the Philippines, Penang and Batavia, to name but a few places. Some of the earlier furniture was commissioned by ship captains for customers back home, but much of the campaign furniture was probably bought by military personnel on their way to their duty station. Trunks were very popular in the 19th century and could be filled with other purchases to make the most of the captain's cargo space and maximize his profits. Some were bought from English trunk makers who added their own labels, but the difference between the makers is usually recognizable to the trained eye. Making and selling furniture, whether for home use or for travel, became big business for Chinese cabinetmakers. So much so that an entire area around Carpenter's Square in Canton alone was named after them. +++ Desk surface (folded out) width: approx. 80cm x depth 64.5 / seat height (floor to lower edge of worktop) approx. 78cm .
