Product description
This pretty pitcher is typical of the work of Vallauris ceramist François Caleca from the late 50s and 60s. His work is immediately recognizable in the speckled glaze, adorned with a rectilinear, slightly recessed pattern and his famous shiny red pastille. Caleca's work appeals to yet another sense: the sense of touch! Indeed, you can't help but run your finger over the red pastille to feel the contrast between its soft, very smooth feel, in contrast to the very slightly rougher feel of the rest! The shape of the jug is very modern for its time: streamlined, with straight lines softened by rounded corners. But what sets this jug apart from other works by calca is its color! Indeed, the background glaze is not a light gray over black speckle as is often the case, but a much rarer pale green and black speckle. Underneath, a Vallauris stamp, the words "décor main" and the signature of françois caleca, the monogram cf. I wondered for a moment why the signature was different (I was reading pi) when everything pointed to caleca as the artist behind this jug! But after some investigation and discussion with other ceramics enthusiasts, I figured it out! The signature is not in the same direction as the "hand-decorated" label, and the incision has been partly buried in the glaze. You have to turn the signature 90° and imagine that the bar of the f is partially invisible, and there you see the monogram cf. This jug is in perfect condition, with no cracks or chips, not even a chip. It measures 17 cm in height, 13 cm in maximum diameter and approximately 19 cm in maximum width from handle to belly.
