Product description
8 very elegant, modernist GAETANO SCIOLARI-style two-arm sconces from the 1960s. Gilded chrome and original smoked glass shades. Shades in perfect condition. Wiring in working order. Dimensions: Height: 22.86 cm Width: 35.56 cm Depth: 20.32 cm Sciolari studied architecture but also made films for a short time. When his father died in 1949, Sciolari took over the family business, Sciolari Lighting, which had been operating in Rome since 1892. The company grew considerably under Gaetano's leadership. For one thing, the pioneering American lighting company Lightolier, based in New York, began importing the Italian brand's luminaires for the American market, and Lightolier's star designer, Gerald Thurston, was strongly influenced by Gaetano's work. In the 1970s, Americans looking to add provocative Gaetano Sciolari fixtures to their living rooms could find them in Lightolier catalogs. Sciolari initially produced lamps and sconces that bore the hallmarks of traditional Italian design. But in the 1950s, when he became the designer of the legendary Milanese lighting manufacturer Stilnovo - one of the leaders of post-war Italian design - he created revolutionary luminaires that have remained his best-known works. Sciolari drew on a variety of influences - enthusiasts see the imprint of Art Deco, Brutalism and others in his lighting - and designed futuristic Space Age chandeliers, ceiling lights and suspended luminaires for Stilnovo as well as Stilkronen and S.A. Boulanger that defy the conventions of the time. A dizzying array of materials and finishes characterizes the designer's work, while geometry is pronounced in every sculptural fixture - there are blown opal glass spheres, polished chrome tubes and square brass bulb holders. These combinations were decisive in the development of dazzling lighting that, decades later, is sure to attract attention in any space. In perfect condition given their age, sold individually or in sets.
