Dominique Chan (1950, Quimper) was born in France to a French mother and Chinese father. Chan then grows up in Brittany and Paris. From 1968 to 1975 he travels through Europe and learns the trade of street artist. Chan eventually ends up in Amsterdam after his wanderings. There he finds work as a draftsman at the Rijksmuseum and studies from 1980 to 1985 at the Rietveld Academy.
After completing his education, Chan makes three trips to China to study the Chinese language and culture. These trips are an important source of inspiration for his work. The meeting between the European and Chinese visual language is also reflected in his artworks. Chan travels a lot. Asia, America and Australia, he gains impressions and likes to learn from other cultures. Chan paints memories of travels, events, people, animals and things. Through his artworks we get a glimpse into his colorful 'diary'.
Chan's works are characterized by the directness of color and form. We see both figurative and abstract elements in his art. These two elements are often intertwined in the works of art. For example, the figurative elements sometimes disappear under the abstract ones, only to surprisingly resurface. Chan often uses a form of action painting in his works. He tells us a story through an intuitive painting style. Often a human figure is the most prominent image, but with careful study an enormous richness of detail can be discovered. Anyone who takes the time to 'read' his works will always discover something new.
