Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) was a Swiss-American photographer, filmmaker and painter best known for his vivid depictions of urban life in New York City. He emigrated from Basel to New York in 1935 and became a central figure in the art scene there. His photographs captured the dynamics and daily life of the city, often featuring street scenes and architecture. In addition to his photographic work, Burckhardt documented the life and work of prominent artists such as Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Hans Hofmann. In doing so, he made an important contribution to the documentation of the New York art movement. His films and photographs offer intimate insight into the art world and city life of the 20th century.
