TIDESWELL, United Kingdom
Product description
A striking example of mid-century British design, this rare and remarkable cocktail sideboard was conceived by the esteemed Robert Heritage in the 1960s and masterfully handcrafted in luxurious rosewood for Meredew. While Heritage is best known for his iconic designs for Archie Shine, he was an independent designer whose influence extended across multiple esteemed British furniture makers. His innovative spirit and versatility earned him recognition as a prolific designer and a distinguished professor of design at the Royal College of Art.
Meredew, typically led by their accomplished chief designer Alphons Loebenstein, occasionally collaborated with outside designers, naming them in their catalogues when their contributions were of particular note. This exceptional piece stands as a rare discovery; its attribution to Robert Heritage was only recently unveiled through a 1969 Meredew catalogue in our collection. Despite appearing on the market occasionally, it remains an elusive and highly sought-after model.
What sets Heritage apart is his remarkable ability to create entirely distinct designs—unlike many designers who develop a signature style. Unlike the Danish designer Ib Kofod Larsen, whose pieces often share common elements across different manufacturers, Heritage’s designs are wholly unique. This sideboard exemplifies his ingenuity, standing apart from his other works with its refined elegance and originality. A true collector’s piece, it embodies the sophistication, craftsmanship, and innovation of one of Britain’s most successful designers.
