Vintage Art Deco Bohemian polar bear sculpture by Ditmar Urbach, Czechoslovakia 1930s Fine piece of Art Deco depicting a scale polar bear at an ice shelf, made by the famous Ditmar Urbach (Czechoslovakia) in the 1930s. This porcelain bowl sculpture, ashtray was designed in honor of Nora, the first polar bear at the Prague Zoo in 1932. The female Nora was purchased from the Karlas circus in 1932. Nora became hugely popular, her popularity at the time also enhanced by public interest in the polar regions. She arrived at the zoo six years after Roald Amundsen flew over the North Pole with the airship Norge, four years after the publication of the first book of Jan Eskymo Welzl's stories and also four years after the shipwreck of the polar airship Italia, on whose board was also the The Czech physicist František Běhounek.
