Alechinsky trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels La Cambre in Brussels from 1944 to 1948. After completing his training, Alechinsky joined the Cobra group (CoBrA= Copenhagen Brussels Amsterdam) in 1949 and was the main representative of Cobra in Brussels. Alechinsky participated or organized the important Cobra exhibitions in Brussels in the early 1950s. After the Cobra period, Alechinsky's work becomes more abstract and expressionistic, influenced in part by his stay in Paris. Under the influence of Walasse Ting, among others, in the 1960s he works increasingly on the basis of oriental techniques. Japanese and Chinese (calligraphy) art have a strong influence on his work. Alechinsky's work is highly regarded, has international name and fame and he has many exhibitions at home and abroad to his credit. These include a major solo exhibition at Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. Consequently, his work is in the collection of major modern art museums around the world.
