Bio: Louis Christiaan Kalff was born in 1897 Amsterdam where he also studied applied arts, furniture design & architecture at the Rietveld Academy. At the age of 27, Kalff wrote in a letter to Anton Philips, the president of Philips & Co. that he felt the company's advertising could be improved. Soon after, he was hired and a year later was put in charge of the commercial and artistic propaganda departments. With his designs for posters and packaging, Kalff rapidly modernized Philips' image. Five years later he started a new lighting consultancy department and became responsible for the lighting of the World's Fairs in Barcelona (and later Antwerp, Brussels and Paris). In addition to the Philips logo, he designed other famous advertising posters (Calvé, PTT, Holland Radio, etc.), book covers, desk lamps and even some buildings. After World War II, he became art director at Philips and worked with Le Corbusier and the composer Edgar Varèse. After his retirement in 1960, he remained active as a consultant for Philips and was involved in the construction of the Evoluon building in Eindhoven. The shape of this building is reflected in many lamps he designed. Louis Kalff died in 1976 Contact me before ordering to confirm availability.
