Peter van Hugten (Amsterdam, March 31, 1949 - there, December 17, 2023) was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and illustrator, best known for his work for the Volkskrant newspaper. At the age of 12, during a long hospitalization, Van Hugten began drawing in earnest. From 1974 to 1976 he worked as a political cartoonist and illustrator for NRC Handelsblad. From 1978 he was a contributor to the Volkskrant for more than 40 years. Van Hugten illustrated more than 300 books and book covers. A number of these were among the Best Dutch Book Designs. Among his most important book illustrations are the drawings for the Collected Works of Willem Elsschot (2005, 2007) and Charles de Coster's Tijl Uilenspiegel (2007). Van Hugten also taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (1980-1995) and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (1979-2000). He exhibited regularly. In October 2010 he published a collection of drawings entitled Bloot. The foreword to this was written by Philip Freriks.
