Product description
Palace door of a prominent chief of the Yoruba people of South West Nigeria. Yoruba can also be found in Togo, Ghana and the Republic of Benin.
The Yoruba have a rich Pantheon of gods and are often compared to the gods of Greek mythology. The door is carved in low relief and divided into eight compartments, which mainly depict scenes from everyday life. The door is carved from hardwood but the type of wood is unknown, presumably mahogany.
The object was purchased in 1972 from the Africa Museum in Berg en Dal. It is not known when the door came to Europe, but probably in the fifties/sixties of the last century. Due to the arrival of Islam in West Africa, the use of images of humans and animals was banned, and the doors were replaced by flat doors.
