For the conclusion of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Piene created the aerial work Olympic Rainbow, consisting of five differently colored floating polyethylene tubes filled with helium, each 600 meters long.
Between 1981 and 1986, Piene organized four Sky Art conferences in the US and Europe.
He experimented with industrial design in the 1970s for a 500-piece series of Timo Sarpaneva 's luxury Suomi dinnerware that Piene decorated for the German porcelain firm Rosenthal.
Piene's works are in more than 200 museums and public collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Harvard Art Museums and the List Visual Arts Center at MIT.
