Product description
The holy city of Ghom is located around 100 km south of Tehran. Although carpet production only began here around 100 years ago, Qom carpets are considered to be one of the most impressive and valuable examples of fine Persian carpet art in the world. Ghom carpets are made exclusively from the finest raw materials available. Ghom silk is one of the finest silks in the world and the wool used is known as cork wool, a high-quality, particularly lustrous wool with a higher fat content that is sheared from the neck of a lamb. The rugs are either made entirely of natural silk pile and warp threads (sometimes double silk pile) or fine cork wool pile, sometimes with intricate silk detailing. The silk threads used are extremely thin, which allows the weavers to use a finer weaving technique, resulting in rugs with a very high knot density and very detailed, intricate patterns. Ghom rugs have a very distinctive style and feature a variety of patterns, from idyllic landscapes to stylized floral medallions, ancient Persian hunting scenes, historical events, images of winged lions, dragons, birds and prayer rugs with various religious motifs and themes. The extreme richness of detail makes them look almost like real paintings. Due to their often smaller size, Ghom rugs are not only used as carpets, but are also hung on walls and appreciated as decorative tapestry art. Making a Ghom rug takes an incredible amount of time and skill, which makes it understandable that Ghom rugs are more common in smaller sizes, although they sometimes exist in larger sizes too. The rugs come in stunningly beautiful color combinations and are also available in rare colors for Persian rugs such as light green and turquoise blue, which have been introduced by a new generation of designers.
