Signed carpet by Mr. Haghighat, Kirman Lavar ---- The city of Kerman is located in the southeast of Iran, 1000 km south of Tehran in the Dasht-e-Lut desert. It is considered one of the most important carpet production areas in Iran. Unlike other parts of Persia, Kerman was able to flourish with relatively little outside influence and invasion due to its remote and isolated geographical location. Kerman weavers were thus able to perfect their carpet skills in peace and develop their artistic creativity. The color and dyeing capabilities of the region were unparalleled and the dyers of Kerman became famous for producing delicate and subtle light hues not found elsewhere. Kerman carpets are characterized by their typical red base color, a rich, traditional red or blue background, beautifully decorated with brighter and more intricate floral, vase-like and curvilinear patterns. Carpets with central medallions and a wider border filled with flowers and large palmettes are also characteristic of the Kerman region. In the 1920s, demand grew in America and to meet the market, lower quality rugs were produced with simpler designs and fewer different color combinations. This trend has slowly changed and in the last 40 years, higher quality and knot density rugs with more or less varied colors and traditional Safavid patterns have found their way back into the market.
