Product description
Kilim Afghan rugs are hand-woven by Turkmen in northern Afghanistan. A traditional weaving technique is used to create the typical step-like pattern, which is characterized by a small gap between the individual blocks of colour. To achieve this, the weaver returns the weft around the last warp of a particular color area and then returns the weft of the adjacent color around the adjacent warp. The void formed between the two spaces should be visible but still remain small. These rugs are remarkably durable and to ensure that the structure of the kilim remains strong, the weaver must ensure that the weft is tightly packed and completely covers the warp. The old weaving technique gives the weaver more freedom to be creative. This results in kilims in natural and vibrant colors with bold, geometric shapes. They are a perfect addition to both the modern and traditional home and due to their versatility they can adorn floors, walls, bedspreads and furniture in the same way that nomads originally used them as floor coverings, bags or curtains for tents. In addition to their versatility, kilims are reversible and have the same pattern on both sides. This means that they can easily be turned over and used if they become soiled or stained.
