Product description
Senneh carpets are made by the Kurds who live in and around the city of Sanandaj (formerly Senneh), the capital of the western Iranian province of Kurdistan. Although the name is now Sanandaj, the carpets made here still go by the historic name of Senneh. Senneh carpets are made from fine wool yarn spun very tightly in the pile, while the warp and weft are made from simpler cotton. The result is a fairly coarse but very robust and durable rug. The unique single weft construction and the use of interwoven warps give the Senneh rug a distinctive and durable pile and a coarser backing. Ironically, the asymmetrical knot, also known as the Persian or Senneh knot, was named after the city, although the symmetrical or Turkish knot is more commonly used to make Senneh rugs. Senneh rugs usually have a large diamond or lozenge-shaped pattern in the center, beautifully decorated with Mir-e-Buteh or Herati designs. The carpets are predominantly made in dark blue and red colors, which is very characteristic of Kurdish carpets. Senneh carpets are a popular and inexpensive carpet choice that is highly valued both in Iran and worldwide. Their elegant designs, sturdiness and darker color schemes make them a great choice for entryways, hallways and other low-traffic areas of the home. Senneh is also the home of the woven kilim Senneh, which is considered the best of all Persian kilims.
