Product description
The small village of Sarouk (Sarough/Sarogh) is located in the mountains of the Iranian interior north of Arak (formerly Sultanabad). During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this small village was one of the most active carpet weaving areas and produced some of the finest room-sized Persian carpets of its time. Western demand for rugs was strong and the vast majority of Sarough rugs were exported, particularly to the USA after the decline of the European market due to the First World War. Sarough rugs became a popular choice due to their quality, durability and style. They are knotted with a Persian knot, are made of high quality, tough wool and have a very thick and dense pile. They are ideal for home use as they will withstand daily traffic and wear and tear after decades of use with proper care and no signs of damage. The "American Sarough" was specially developed for the American market. These rugs were originally woven with lighter rust-colored backgrounds, which did not prove successful as the American market wanted deeper and richer colors. As a result, the rugs had to be re-dyed on arrival, giving them the name "Painted Sarouks". Sarogh rugs are available in a variety of designs. Beautiful rugs with central medallions and open-field designs with cream, indigo and bright red floral motifs are common.
