Heriz carpets are knotted in and around the city of Heris in the northwestern part of Iran in East Azerbaijan near the city of Tabriz. Heriz rugs are durable and hard-wearing and can last for many generations if cared for properly. This is partly due to the geographical proximity of Mount Sabalan, which is located on an important copper deposit. Traces of this copper can be found in the sheep's drinking water, resulting in a harder and more resilient wool quality than in other areas. Heriz rugs are fairly easy to recognize - they often have a distinctive large rectangular medallion and large marked corner sections. The rugs tend to be quite large and are ideal for larger spaces, both in offices and homes. Their dimensions and intricate medallion patterns are the perfect complement to open spaces, allowing the rug to tie a room's décor together beautifully.
