Azilal Berber carpets are made in the mountainous region surrounding Azilal. Traditionally they were decorated mainly with multiple monochromatic patterns on a white or ecru background, although today they are increasingly characterized by a multitude of ultra-colorful, sometimes even fluorescent patterns.
Azilal rugs thus represent a clever blend between tradition and modernity by combining contemporary colorful visuals with traditional weaving techniques. Their design is authentic and combines Berber symbolism, sometimes reinterpreted with contemporary colors, making an Azilal rug a trendy rug while staying true to traditional Berber art.
Azilal rugs are less densely woven than other Berber rugs, such as the Beni Ouarain, and can sometimes be woven with a cotton weft thread, which is mainly in the fringes. These are carpets that are slightly thinner and more flexible than traditional Beni Ouarain, while still reflecting the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship.
