Very rare propaganda poster with inscription 'May 28, 1940, Halt, Sire we never forget', poster depicting King Leopold III on the occasion of the 18 day campaign. This beautiful poster has been professionally restored, dry cleaned and doused twice with Japanese paper and acid-free glue. Through this careful and rather expensive process, all creases are out of the poster and it has become structurally much stronger, and thus preserved for the future.
At the bottom inscription "Free from seal," creation Almar Wervik.
King Leopold III protected his war-weary population and military from bombing by the Germans by surrendering the army on May 28, 1940. For the monarch it came down to saving what could be saved, taking in buy that the enemy controlled the country. He no longer believed in an Allied victory; the future would prove him wrong. The people were enormously grateful to him for this because bombing by the Germans was otherwise inevitable, resulting in very many casualties.
In very good restored condition, when we obtained the poster there was a tear along the middle that was held together with adhesive tape, after restoration it was removed and the 2 parts were brought together as best as possible, the poster also had some tears and an inscription on the back, through restoration all the blemishes are out and it is preserved for the future. The inscription is still legible. Check the photos for more details!
