Product description
Mid - Century modern desk lamp by the German company HOSO, in very good vintage condition. A beautifully elegant 70s design made with German craftsmanship and quality. Made of a weighted white plastic base, a curved metal tube with a ball joint at the end. The ball joint allows you to rotate the shade almost 360 degrees. The shade is made of white plastic and aluminum. HOSO was known for its early use of Bakelite. Since this is a lamp from the 1970s, the plastic is probably melamine, which can be considered the successor to bakelite. Condition: Very good, only minor signs of wear appropriate for age, see photos for reference. The lamp is fully functional with no defects. The lamp uses a small size E14 bulb. Dimensions: Maximum height: 34.3 centimeters Length shade: 14.5 centimeters Diameter shade: 14 centimeters Base: 6.4 x 10.9 centimeters About HOSO Hoso stands for Hoffmeister & Sohn. The company was formed when Wilhelm Hoffmeister took over an engineering firm called Fritz Backhaus in the town of Lüdenscheid in 1910. In the early years, the company manufactured and installed switchgear. When Bakelite became a popular material for use in manufacturing, Wilhelm Hoffmeister decided to start producing Bakelite lamps and the company name was changed to HOSO around 1928. The first HOSO bakelite lamps were ceiling and night lamps, later followed by desk lamps and tube lamps. The company continued to grow, both before and after World War I, and always remained a family business. Wilhelm Hoffmeister died in 1951. Because of its success, driven by the German economic miracle after the war, the company had to change buildings several times. During the reign of the fourth generation of the Hoffmeister family, the company was sold to the American JJI Lighting Group in 1997. In 2008, after 98 years in Lüdenscheid, the company moved to the town of Schalksmühle. HOSO never named specific designers who worked for them, so they must have had their own design team. The company won a number of IF design awards.
