The G55 seat occupies a special place in the oeuvre of Michaël Verheyden, which can gradually be called impressive. “It is one of my most elegant works,” says the designer about the chair from 2012. “And light, too. The metal tubular frame does not weigh much at all and consists of one piece. An artisanal Belgian tanned saddle leather is then sewn to this with a hand stitch.” Single-handedly, yes. Because Verheyden attaches great importance to quality, but especially because the designer-maker subscribes to a long tradition of crafts and craftsmanship.
“The design of the G55 was created on the way back home from Milan. I went there with Saartje and Geoffrey to visit the annual furniture fair.” With this he refers to his wife and Geoffrey Brusatto, who is not only a kindred spirit but also a renowned (typo)graphic designer. “That G is a reference to him intended as a joke. But it was really on the way back in the car that I got the idea for the chair... I actually often design on the road. As if only then do I find the time to think about things.”
This tubular metal sling chair is made of natural calfskin/saddle leather. This is an unprocessed, undyed leather. Beautiful quality. The leather only becomes more beautiful as it ages, but it does show minor scratches because it is very soft.
