Product description
Extremely rare large antique trompe l'oeil, featuring a large green melon or watermelon (certainly not papaya) with a cut slice. Ceramic, earthenware or hand-crafted majolica, no certainty as to origin, most probably Italy early 20th century or earlier. The "slice" faces upwards, in the middle of which are 22 holes whose purpose is unclear, but it could well be a flower spike. Multi-lobed oval shape, textured like a squash skin, hand-painted and glazed in dark green, pale yellow and marbled tones. Orange and yellow center/stem. Small brown tail. Flat underside. Approx. 29cm long max, approx. 15cm wide max, 16-16.5cm high max. Very good overall condition, with very small and rare marks of age or extremely discreet workmanship (tiny bumps, varnish tarnished by time) and patina. A manufacturing defect under the base, a relatively large firing crack, quite deep, so I don't think it holds water, a flower spike for dry flower bouquets. Not very annoying, though, since it's underneath. Around 1kg, relatively light for its size. There seems to be an embossed stamp on the crack, but I can't be sure, it's illegible.
